Alabama Crimson Tide vs Mississippi State Bulldogs prediction and recent form

Alabama arrives in Starkville as the more complete team, but Kamario Taylor has turned Mississippi State into an offense that can stay on the field with anyone. These are two unbeaten SEC teams in early October. The question is whether Taylor and the Bulldogs can keep pace for four quarters with a quarterback playing as well as Keelon Russell is.

Alabama is 4-0 and averaging 48 points a game, and Russell has been precise in the two biggest tests. Against Florida State he went 23 of 30 for 320 yards and three touchdowns as the Crimson Tide came back from 15 points down to win 50-36. A week later he threw for 365 yards and four scores on 21 of 27 passing in a 49-18 win over South Carolina. Mississippi State is also 4-0, which is a big change for a program that went 5-8 last season and 1-7 in the SEC. Taylor leads the FBS with 14 touchdown passes, and he threw for 360 yards in last week's 31-24 win over Missouri, a game the Bulldogs trailed by seven going into the fourth quarter. Treat Mississippi State's scoring average carefully, though. A 62-13 win over Louisiana-Monroe accounts for a good share of it. The road wins at Minnesota and South Carolina are better evidence that this team is real.

The key matchup is Mississippi State's run game against an Alabama front missing two edge rushers. Justin Hill and Desmond Umeozulu are both out with lower-leg injuries, which leaves Alabama thinner on the edge exactly where it needs to keep Taylor contained. Mississippi State ranks fourth nationally in rushing success rate, meaning it gains enough on more than half its carries to stay ahead of the chains. Taylor ran for 86 yards against Minnesota. If he can extend plays and keep the Bulldogs in second-and-short, Alabama's defense can't commit extra rushers to him without leaving receivers open downfield. Alabama's defense still rates among the top 20 nationally in efficiency per play, and its best route is to keep Taylor in the pocket and make him throw on third-and-long.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

Alabama has an injury concern of its own on offense. Right tackle Jayvin James is questionable with a lower-leg injury. Freshman Tyrell Miller held up well after replacing him against South Carolina, and left guard Will Sanders is expected to play. Russell has been accurate enough to make up for shaky protection, but a young right side against a home crowd is worth watching early.

Weather could matter. The forecast is warm and mostly cloudy, with thunderstorms possible around kickoff. Rain or a delay would favor Mississippi State's run-first approach and make the deep passing and long field goals harder for both sides.

History is firmly on Alabama's side: the Crimson Tide have won 16 straight in the series, and Mississippi State's last win came in 2007. We give Alabama roughly a two-in-three chance to win and expect a margin of five or six points, close to the current Alabama -5.5. At around -220, Alabama's moneyline is a modest position, not a strong one, because Mississippi State has enough offense to make this close. The total of 59.5 to 60.5 also looks about right, with two efficient offenses offset by the chance of storms.
