Florida Gators vs Missouri Tigers prediction and recent form

Florida arrives in Columbia as the more dangerous team. The question this game asks is whether Missouri's pass defense, one of the best in the country at winning individual downs, can make the Gators' offense look ordinary for one afternoon. Jon Sumrall's team is 4-0 and scoring more than 52 points a game. Missouri has the kind of defense that can shorten a game, and a home crowd that knows its team let one slip a week ago.

Florida's last result was its loudest. The Gators beat then-No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28, ran for 302 yards and scored six rushing touchdowns. One lopsided score shouldn't carry too much weight, though. Two weeks earlier, Florida needed everything it had to get out of Auburn with a 44-39 win, and its defense is allowing nearly 23 points a game, which ranks in the middle of the country. The offense is real. The defense is still something to watch.

Missouri's form is harder to read. Wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kansas and Troy said little. Then the Tigers led Mississippi State 24-17 going into the fourth quarter and lost 31-24, their first test against an SEC opponent. Austin Simmons has been efficient all season, with 947 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions, and Cayden Lee caught 11 passes for 156 yards in that loss. Missouri is also playing without Ahmad Hardy, its All-American running back, who is still recovering from a gunshot wound to the thigh suffered in May. Jamal Roberts has run well in his place, but Hardy's absence makes the Tigers easier to defend on early downs.

The game turns on Florida's run game against Missouri's front. Jadan Baugh has topped 100 rushing yards in all four games, with 600 yards at 7.2 a carry and 11 touchdowns, and Duke Clark added 126 against Ole Miss. Missouri's run defense sits around the middle of the national rankings by efficiency. Against the pass it is far better, ranking third in the country in success rate allowed, which means opposing quarterbacks rarely gain the yardage the down requires. Daeden Hopkins has six sacks and two forced fumbles off the edge. If Missouri can stop Baugh on first down and force Aaron Philo into obvious passing downs, Hopkins gets the matchup he wants. Philo has been accurate, completing 72.4% of his passes, but his receiving group may be thin. Vernell Brown III, who has 271 receiving yards and two punt-return touchdowns, is questionable with a low-grade knee sprain, and Bailey Stockton is also questionable.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

On the other side, Florida's linebacker Jayden Woods leads the team with 4.5 sacks, and the Gators have been stingy on early downs. That matters against a Missouri offense that has to lean on Simmons more than Eli Drinkwitz would like. Florida is also converting nearly 62% of its third and fourth downs, while Missouri sits near 43%, and that gap tends to show up late in close games.

Conditions shouldn't be a factor. The forecast calls for sunshine and a high around 72, so neither passing game nor either kicker should be affected.

Florida is the right side to win. The Gators have the best offense on the field and a ground game Missouri hasn't shown it can stop. The market has Florida around -205, which asks a lot of a road team with a leaky defense, so this is a measured lean rather than an emphatic one. Florida is the favorite, but Missouri's pass defense gives the Tigers a real chance. The spread sits near Florida -5.5 and the total near 57, both close to where we see the game, so neither offers anything worth chasing.
