Indiana Hoosiers vs Nebraska Cornhuskers prediction and recent form
Indiana arrives in Lincoln as the defending national champion, riding 21 straight wins, and Nebraska is 5-0 for the first time since 2016. This is a real test for a Cornhuskers team that hasn't beaten a ranked opponent in a decade.
Both teams are scoring in bulk. Indiana, 5-0 and ranked in the top ten, averages about 44 points a game and allows under 11. Nebraska averages 43.6 and allows 14.2. Nebraska's five wins have all come by at least 18 points, and it has scored 30 or more every week.
The recent results point in slightly different directions. Indiana beat Rutgers 47-15 with nearly 600 yards, and Josh Hoover threw four touchdown passes. Turbo Richard ran for a career-high 204 yards on just 13 carries. But Indiana has not been as tidy against the number, going 1-4 against the spread. Its closest game was a 29-23 win over Northwestern in Week 4, and it has given up 38 second-half points over its last two games. Nebraska beat Maryland 48-23 after trailing by nine late in the second quarter. It then scored twice in under three minutes before halftime, and safety Dwayne McDougle III returned an interception 81 yards for a touchdown. One strong half doesn't prove a team has fixed everything, and the Maryland game also shows how quickly Nebraska can swing a game.
The decisive matchup is Indiana's run game against Nebraska's front. Richard is averaging 9.3 yards a carry on 587 yards and five touchdowns. That kind of efficiency is partly big-play variance, so it should cool against a defense that held Michigan State to 39 rushing yards. Nebraska's strength is the third down, where it allows conversions on only 21.3% of attempts, second-best in the country. If the Huskers can push Indiana into third-and-long, Osunsanmi's pass rush on the other side gets more dangerous, with four sacks and a sack in every game this season. That matters because Nebraska's quarterback, Anthony Colandrea, has been careful with the ball, with 13 touchdowns against two interceptions. He also adds 249 rushing yards, and a quarterback who can run gives Indiana's defense a second problem on early downs.
Head-to-head and tactical matchup
Nebraska's offense is built on balance. It has topped 200 rushing yards and 200 passing yards in four of five games, and it converts over half its third downs. The question is whether that works against the best defense it has seen. Indiana ranks fourth nationally in total defense, and the Huskers' wins so far came against weaker opposition.
Home field matters, and a noon kickoff in Memorial Stadium will be loud. The model still gives Indiana the edge, with Nebraska winning about a third of the time. The Hoosiers have more proven depth, and they have won close games against good teams before. We could not confirm a final injury report or a game-day forecast, so anything that changes late in the week could move this.
The market makes Indiana roughly a touchdown-and-a-half favorite at -7.5, with the moneyline around -305 and the total in the high 40s to low 50s. Indiana is the better bet to win outright, but at this price it is a short-odds call, not a bargain. Our projection is close to the market spread and total, so there is no edge on either.
