Maryland Terrapins vs Ohio State Buckeyes prediction and recent form
Ohio State enters Saturday's game at Ohio Stadium as one of the most lopsided favorites on the Big Ten calendar. The useful question is whether Maryland can score enough to stay inside a number this large, not whether the Buckeyes win.
The Buckeyes are 4-1. Their only loss was a painful one at Texas in Week 2, when they let a 23-3 lead slip and fell 24-23. They have won three straight since, including a 31-14 win over Iowa. One late collapse on the road against a strong opponent says little about a team that ranks among the top handful nationally in per-play efficiency and in how often its plays succeed. Maryland ranks around 100th and 87th in those same measures.
Maryland is 2-3. Quarterback Malik Washington is the reason the Terrapins aren't simply overmatched. The sophomore threw for nearly 3,000 yards as a freshman and completed 34 of 41 for 347 yards in the win at UConn. The Terrapins' two wins came against Hampton and UConn, though, and neither tells you much about what happens against a defense of Ohio State's caliber. Maryland has also gone 2-8 against the spread over its last 10 games, which fits a program that has had two straight 4-8 seasons and a coaching staff under pressure.
The decisive matchup is Ohio State's passing game against a Maryland secondary that has been vulnerable. The Terrapins rank in the 70s nationally in opponent efficiency per pass and in how often opponents succeed through the air. Julian Sayin can take what the defense gives him, and Jeremiah Smith is the problem Maryland cannot fully solve. He is averaging about nine catches, 165 yards and nearly two touchdowns per game. Maryland's new offensive coordinator wants a more committed ground attack, but a team trailing by multiple scores tends to abandon the run, which exposes Washington to a pass rush that knows what is coming.
Head-to-head and tactical matchup
There is also a way for Maryland to make this uncomfortable. Washington is accurate on short and intermediate throws, and quick passes can blunt a pass rush. A few early completions and some sustained drives would keep the clock moving and slow the game. Ohio State's loss at Texas showed it can go quiet for stretches when a lead looks safe. A backdoor touchdown late is plausible. A genuine upset is not.
I couldn't confirm any injury news that changes the outlook for either side, and I haven't built the forecast around one. Mid-October in Columbus can bring wind or cold, but nothing I found suggests weather will shape the passing game.
The Buckeyes are the clear pick to win, with the model giving them about a 98% chance. The market agrees, and it has the spread near Ohio State -34.5 with the total at 56.5. The model's margin is a touch shorter than that number, but the gap is too small to act on. The number is steep enough that one garbage-time score could decide the cover either way.
