Milwaukee Brewers vs Los Angeles Dodgers prediction and recent form

The Dodgers return to Chavez Ravine down 2-0 in the NLCS, and the question is whether a lineup that has produced six runs in two games can find enough against a left-hander it has already seen twice this season. Milwaukee has been the better team in this series, but the Dodgers are still the more likely winner on Wednesday night, and the price already reflects that.

The Brewers have won both games the way a 103-win team is supposed to. Game 1 was a 2-1 grind. Game 2 was a 7-4 win in which Yoshinobu Yamamoto was chased in the third inning, the shortest start of his career, after Christian Yelich lined a two-run single off a hanging curveball. William Contreras drove in runs in the first, fifth and sixth, and the Brewers bullpen retired the final 15 Dodgers batters. Milwaukee's relievers carry a 0.31 ERA this postseason, which is the kind of number that regresses, but it has not done so yet.

The Dodgers' recent form is not as bad as the series score. Several of their Game 2 runs came off Milwaukee defensive mistakes, and Logan Henderson's line had only two earned runs. A team that scores four on a night like that is not broken, though it is not hitting the way its lineup suggests. Shohei Ohtani is managing biceps and knee issues, Freddie Freeman is dealing with a sore knee, and both have been quiet at the plate.

The decisive matchup is Blake Snell against Robert Gasser, who are both expected to start, though neither assignment was official when this was written. Snell returned from elbow surgery and went 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 39.2 regular-season innings, and he carries a 2.19 ERA in five starts at Dodger Stadium this year. His one October outing was shakier: one run over 3.2 innings, with five walks. If he stays in the zone, the Brewers' left-handed bats are the ones most exposed to his slider and fastball mix. If he doesn't, Milwaukee's patient top of the order, with Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang and Contreras, will take the walks and make him work.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

Gasser has been steady lately, with a 1.67 ERA over his last six starts, and held the Padres to one run over four innings in the NLDS. The regular-season record against Los Angeles is the concern: seven earned runs in 10.2 innings over two starts. His margin for error against Mookie Betts, Teoscar Hernández and a lineup that may sit Ohtani against a lefty is thin, and he is unlikely to go deep.

That makes the bullpens decisive. The Dodgers used seven of their nine relievers in Game 2, and Edwin Díaz is the main high-leverage arm left in good shape. Milwaukee's Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby have been used heavily as well, so the late innings could run thinner on both sides than the postseason ERA suggests.

The pressure is largely on the home team. Only one of 42 teams that fell behind 3-0 in a best-of-seven has come back, and the Dodgers know a loss here puts them in that spot. Home field, Snell's home numbers and the stronger lineup depth give them the edge, though not a large one. Los Angeles opened around -166, with Milwaukee near +137, which is a fair reflection of the game's likelihood. At that price the Dodgers are the pick but not the value.

Prediction and market context

Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers to win

Projected score: Dodgers 4, Brewers 3

Betting angle: No bet. The Dodgers are the likeliest winner but -166 is a fair price, and there is no lean on the run line or total.
