Kansas City Chiefs vs Miami Dolphins prediction and recent form
Kansas City arrives in Miami as the largest favorite on the Week 3 board, and the reason is less about the Chiefs than about what the Dolphins have become. Miami has scored exactly 13 points in each of its first two games, has lost 27-13 at Las Vegas and 35-13 at San Francisco, and hands a first-time franchise quarterback his home opener against Patrick Mahomes. The prediction here is not complicated. The price is the whole argument.
Kansas City is 2-0 and looks like a team that has solved the problem that defined its 2025. Kenneth Walker III ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-10 win over Denver while Mahomes was eased back into his first game since tearing his ACL, then Mahomes threw for 382 yards and three scores in an overtime win over Indianapolis, with Walker adding 117 rushing yards and a 22-yard catch that set up the winning field goal. That is a run game that forces a defense to commit and a passing game that punishes the commitment. One caveat: the Colts win took overtime, and a 2-0 team that has needed a late field goal is not quite the machine the spread implies.
Miami's problems start with protection, which is strange given the personnel. Patrick Paul allowed four sacks across 975 snaps last season and Aaron Brewer surrendered one all year at center, yet Malik Willis has already been sacked nine times, more than any quarterback in the league. Some of that is Willis holding the ball while learning Bobby Slowik's offense; some of it is a receiving room stripped down to studs after Tyreek Hill's release and Jaylen Waddle's trade to Denver, which leaves few quick answers when the first read is covered. Willis has completed 58 percent for 417 yards with one touchdown and one interception, ranks 27th in passer rating, and saw nearly 40 percent of his Week 2 passing yards come on a single 77-yard throw to Ryan Miller with the game decided. Chris Jones has no sacks yet and only a handful of pressures; this is the week that changes.
Head-to-head and tactical matchup
Jeff Hafley's defense is the other half of it. San Francisco scored touchdowns on its first five drives with Miami recording no sacks and no takeaways, and the run fits that gave up 4.8 yards a carry a year ago are being rebuilt under Sean Duggan and Joe Barry with Minkah Fitzpatrick and Bradley Chubb gone. Chop Robinson is cleared from concussion protocol and is the one legitimate edge threat, but Sean Duggan's own framing is the tell: against Mahomes there is always a second play after the pocket breaks, and that is where Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice live.
What argues for Miami is narrow. Kansas City is without left tackle Josh Simmons for a third straight game, Chamarri Conner is doubtful and Mansoor Delane is only probable in the secondary, and a 1 p.m. kickoff in 88-degree South Florida sun is a real tax on a visiting team, even with this weekend's drier air muting the usual humidity. None of it changes who should win; it changes how tidy the win looks.
Prediction and market context
Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs to win
Projected score: Kansas City 27, Miami 18
Betting angle: Kansas City on the moneyline, accepting that a price near -700 leaves thin value; no lean on the spread or the total at the current numbers
