Seattle Seahawks vs Washington Commanders prediction and recent form
Seattle comes to Northwest Stadium on a 12-game winning streak with its starting quarterback healthy again, and Washington meets them 0-2 without the player the entire offense is built around. Jayden Daniels dislocated his left elbow in Dallas when a teammate stepped on his foot, and after consulting specialists he and the team chose to skip surgery and treat it week to week. Marcus Mariota starts instead. That is the shape of the game, and it is why the market moved Seattle to a 7.5-point road favorite at a total of 40.5.
Form needs a caveat on both sides. Seattle's 31-7 win over Arizona was the loudest result of its first two weeks, but Drew Lock's three touchdown passes to Jaxon Smith-Njigba came against a defense that missed tackles all afternoon, and the week before that the Seahawks needed a late rally to beat New England 13-10 in a Super Bowl rematch. Sam Darnold, who hurt his glute on the opening possession of Week 1, practiced fully Thursday and Friday and carries no designation. Washington's two losses were not identical either: the Commanders lost 24-22 in Philadelphia on a failed two-point conversion, then were beaten 37-20 by Dallas in a game where the secondary busted coverages repeatedly.
The decisive matchup is Seattle's front against a Washington protection that will be short a starter. Leonard Williams, DeMarcus Lawrence and Byron Murphy II generate pressure without much help behind them, Ernest Jones IV plays nearly every snap in the middle, and the Seahawks have allowed 3.8 yards per play, the lowest figure in the league. Guard Samuel Cosmi is out with a concussion and throat injury. Mariota is a careful, rhythm-dependent passer who needs clean pockets and defined throws; against a defense that disguises its coverage this well, his best outcomes come from getting the ball out early to Stefon Diggs, who caught both of Washington's touchdowns in Dallas from the slot, and from leaning on Rachaad White, who averaged 6.1 yards a carry and caught six passes in that same game.
Head-to-head and tactical matchup
Washington has one genuine opening. Julian Love and Ty Okada are both out, so Seattle starts AJ Finley and Rodney Thomas II at safety, and Terry McLaurin's deep targets are the obvious way to test that. But the Commanders are also missing Frankie Luvu, their best off-ball defender, along with tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo and safety Nick Cross, and their defense has yet to record a takeaway while allowing seven touchdown passes. A unit ranked 26th in expected points added per play — meaning most snaps against it gain real value for the offense — cannot afford short fields.
The forecast argues for a grinding afternoon: roughly 66 degrees with rain and wind around 14 miles per hour out of the northwest, enough to shorten both passing games and make long field goals a live question. Seattle's two games have produced 23 and 38 total points, and a backup quarterback in the rain against the league's stingiest defense is not the profile of a shootout.
Seattle should win, and the Seahawks are 16-2 on the road under Mike Macdonald, but -370 is a steep price for a team that has needed its defense to carry close games. The number that looks wrong is the total.
