Detroit Lions vs Carolina Panthers prediction and recent form
The Detroit Lions arrive in Charlotte as the better and healthier team. But they have a habit of turning comfortable games into shootouts, so the Carolina Panthers have a real chance on Sunday night. Detroit has scored exactly 31 points in all three games. It has also allowed 30, 41 and 24, which is why a 2-1 record has felt closer than it should.
Detroit's form needs a caveat. It beat New Orleans 31-30 in overtime, lost 41-31 in Buffalo and beat the Jets 31-24 last week. The offense is real. Jared Goff has Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown, and the scoring has been the same every week. The defense is the open question, and Detroit has also lost six straight road games. Carolina's 1-2 record covers wild swings. It lost the opener 59-37 to Chicago, beat Atlanta 34-3, then lost 21-18 in Cleveland. Read on its own, any one of those results would mislead you about this team.
Bryce Young leads the league with 939 passing yards and has seven touchdowns against two interceptions. He is on the injury report with a knee problem and wore a brace in practice, but he practiced fully all week and is expected to play. The bigger worry for Carolina is the people around him. Left guard Damien Lewis and receiver Xavier Legette are out. Jalen Coker, the team's leading receiver with 18 catches for 222 yards, is questionable with a quad injury. Rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling was still waiting for final concussion clearance late in the week, with Stone Forsythe ready to step in. Corey Bullock will make his first start at left guard.
That leads straight into the matchup that should decide the game. Detroit is third in the league in pressures and second in sacks, and it is strongest on the interior. Against the Jets it produced 24 pressures and five sacks. Young has completed 74.6 percent of his passes when he is not pressured and 40.7 percent under heavy pressure. A first-time starter at guard, possibly next to a backup at tackle, is exactly where Detroit will push. Carolina's best answer is probably extra tight ends, with Darren Waller as a quick, reliable target. Buffalo, the Jets and New Orleans all hurt Detroit with tight ends, and Young found Waller well in Cleveland.
Head-to-head and tactical matchup
On the other side, Carolina has lost both starting outside cornerbacks. Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson went on injured reserve after the Cleveland game, so Akayleb Evans and rookie Will Lee III are likely to cover a deep Detroit receiving group. Linebacker Devin Lloyd practiced fully through a calf issue, which helps. Still, St. Brown working against a reshuffled secondary is the clearest mismatch on the field. Detroit has injury problems in the back too. Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph and Thomas Harper are all out at safety, and cornerback D.J. Reed was limited all week with a rib injury. Detroit will probably be without offensive lineman Ben Bartch again, while edge rusher DJ Wonnum returned to full practice.
Weather could tone down the scoring. Rain is expected for most of Sunday in Charlotte and may ease by kickoff, with temperatures in the mid-60s and light wind. A wet grass field makes it harder to throw deep and to hold onto the ball. That partly explains why we expect a lower score than the market total of 50.5, though not by enough to bet the under.
We have the Lions winning a close game, roughly 58 percent of the time. That is below what the market price implies, so treat this as a modest edge, not a confident one. Detroit is a 3.5-point favorite, and our projected margin sits just under that number. We have no position on the spread or the total.
