Indianapolis Colts vs Washington Commanders prediction and recent form

Indianapolis arrives in London as the more complete team on Sunday, mostly because Washington is again without Jayden Daniels. Marcus Mariota did enough last week to keep the Commanders from being written off, but the Colts have the steadier quarterback situation and the healthier lineup. That is a sound reason to make them the pick, though it does not make them a comfortable one.

Both teams are 1-2, and both got their first win in Week 3. Indianapolis beat Houston 19-17, which ended a nine-game losing streak that dated back to last season. Before that the Colts lost 41-23 to Baltimore and 33-30 in overtime at Kansas City. That Houston game was the defense's best day by a distance: it held the Texans to 237 total yards. Across three weeks, though, the unit ranks 28th in the league in both expected points allowed per play and success rate. In plain terms, opponents have moved the ball on them often, and one good afternoon against Houston does not erase that.

Washington's 33-31 win over Seattle needs the same caution. Mariota went 19 of 31 for 183 yards and three touchdowns, but the Commanders were outgained by nearly 200 yards and won mainly because of turnovers. Turnovers rarely repeat from week to week. Washington has also allowed 30 or more points in back-to-back games. Its two losses were close, 24-22 at Philadelphia and then at Dallas in the game where Daniels dislocated his non-throwing elbow. Daniels practiced on a limited basis in a brace this week and was ruled out on Friday. Washington is aiming for a return against the Giants in Week 5.

The matchup that matters most is Jonathan Taylor against Washington's run defense. Taylor leads the league with 66 carries for 258 yards and four touchdowns, but that is only 3.9 yards per carry. With Alec Pierce on injured reserve and Keenan Allen questionable after missing Friday's practice, the Colts' offense runs through Taylor more than ever. Washington allows just 3.8 yards per rush and ranks third in rushing efficiency allowed. If Taylor keeps getting stopped on early downs, Daniel Jones will face too many third-and-long situations. Jones has 611 passing yards through three games and leans heavily on Tyler Warren, who caught nine passes against Houston. Warren working the middle against a Washington secondary without safety Nick Cross may be the Colts' best way to move the ball.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

On the other side, DeForest Buckner already has three sacks and meets a Washington interior line missing guard Sam Cosmi. Mariota extends plays well when the pocket breaks down, but extended plays with a backup quarterback are where turnovers come from. Terry McLaurin is questionable with a hamstring injury, which would remove Mariota's most reliable outside target. The return of Frankie Luvu and Chig Okonkwo helps Washington, and Austin Ekeler was signed with Rachaad White's shoulder in doubt.

Washington is the designated home team, but this is effectively a neutral field, and both teams have made the same trip. The forecast is mild and dry with light wind, so weather should not affect the passing or kicking game.

The market opened with Washington as a 1.5-point favorite and has moved to Colts -3.5, mainly because Daniels is out. We land close to that number, with Indianapolis winning about three times in five. The Colts are the right side to back to win outright, but at roughly -190 the price leaves little room for error against a team that has stayed in close games.
