Los Angeles Rams vs Philadelphia Eagles prediction and recent form

The Los Angeles Rams arrive in Philadelphia as the better-functioning team, but they are carrying the memory of a second half in Denver they would rather forget, and history in this matchup gives them reason for caution. The Eagles have won all three meetings over the past two seasons. Sean McVay has never beaten Vic Fangio as a head coach, losing all four times. That makes a short road price on the Rams more interesting than comfortable.

Both teams are coming off losses that look bad but probably overstate their problems. The Rams, at 1-2, held Denver scoreless in the first half on Sunday night and outgained the Broncos 273 to 67. Then they lost 30-26. Denver forced three straight punts after halftime, Matthew Stafford threw a pick-six on a third-and-38, and the game ended on an interception in the end zone after Bo Nix scored the go-ahead touchdown with 47 seconds left. One collapse shouldn't erase a half that dominant. The Eagles, at 2-1, were handled 27-7 in Chicago on Monday night by Case Keenum, who was starting in place of the injured Caleb Williams. Philadelphia managed 248 yards, turned it over three times, converted 22 percent of its third downs and opened the second half with three straight three-and-outs. That fits a longer pattern: since the start of last season, the Eagles have gone three-and-out more often than any other offense.

The matchup that should decide this game is the Rams' running game against a depleted Philadelphia front. Kyren Williams is averaging 5.6 yards a carry and Blake Corum 5.3. Because McVay sticks with the run, his play-action passing has real teeth. The Eagles' interior is banged up. Jordan Davis and Moro Ojomo were limited in practice all week. Zack Baun, the linebacker who ties Fangio's run fits together, is in the concussion protocol and looks unlikely to be cleared. If the Rams can win early downs on the ground, Stafford gets manageable third downs against a pass rush that has only three sacks in three games.

The Eagles' offense has its own personnel problems. DeVonta Smith (hamstring) looks unlikely to play. Dallas Goedert, Marquise Brown and tackle Fred Johnson all missed practice. Jalen Hurts could be left without his usual targets on a short week after a Monday game, so Saquon Barkley carries even more of the load. He had 82 yards on 15 carries in Chicago and has hurt the Rams badly before.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

The Rams have absences too. Aaron Donald, who came out of retirement in August, will miss the game with a sore back. Tight end Terrance Ferguson and cornerback Jaylen Watson are out, and Colby Parkinson is questionable. That leaves Emmanuel Forbes and Josh Wallace sharing time at corner. The best news for Los Angeles is that Puka Nacua is cleared to return after missing two games with a hip injury, though his snaps will be managed. Davante Adams already has 358 receiving yards. Even a partial workload from Nacua makes it harder for Fangio to roll coverage toward one receiver.

Showers are in the forecast, with temperatures in the mid-60s and a light wind. Rain tends to favor the team that runs the ball better, and that points toward Los Angeles.

The Rams are the right side to win. They are healthier where it matters most this week, and their offense has been the more reliable of the two. At roughly -155, though, the price only slightly beats a fair number. The spread has moved from 2.5 to 3.5, and our projected margin lands just short of that, so there is no edge in laying it. The total has dropped to 42.5, and the wet weather and Philadelphia's offensive struggles cut against the more open game our projection leans toward.
