Atlanta Falcons vs New Orleans Saints prediction and recent form
Michael Penix Jr. has changed what the Atlanta Falcons are, and that makes this Monday night game in the Superdome closer than a home-field favorite's price would usually suggest. The New Orleans Saints are still the pick, but only narrowly: this is a game between two 1-2 teams, each with a reason to believe its last result misled it.
Start with Atlanta, because the recent swing is so large. With Cooper Rush at quarterback, the Falcons managed 262 yards and 8 points across losses to Pittsburgh and Carolina. Penix came back from his torn ACL against Green Bay and the offense produced 498 yards in a 35-14 win. He was efficient rather than spectacular, going 18 of 25 for 256 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The bigger story was Bijan Robinson, who ran for 194 yards and two scores on 29 carries and now leads the league in yards from scrimmage. Drake London added 194 receiving yards. One dominant night against a Packers defense deserves some caution, since a single result tends to pull a team's perceived level further than the underlying evidence supports. Still, the gap between the Rush games and the Penix game is too wide to dismiss.
New Orleans arrives with the opposite problem. The Saints lost 35-27 at Las Vegas after leading 27-22, and four turnovers did most of the damage. Turnovers are among the least repeatable parts of a football season, so Tyler Shough and the offense are probably better than that scoreline implies. They are also thinner at the skill positions, with Travis Etienne Jr. and wide receiver Jordan Tyson both on injured reserve.
Head-to-head and tactical matchup
The decisive matchup is Atlanta's run-first approach against a Saints defense missing linebackers Kaden Elliss and Anfernee Jennings and edge rusher Carl Granderson. Atlanta ran for 242 yards last week, and that early-down success is what opens play-action for Penix and London. If Robinson keeps winning on first and second down, New Orleans will have to load the box, and the missing linebackers make that harder to do cleanly. With Granderson out, the Saints also have less ability to pressure Penix when the Falcons do get into passing situations. Pete Werner and Noah Fant are questionable, and Atlanta lists Divine Deablo, Samson Ebukam and Yasir Abdullah the same way, so both defenses could shift before kickoff.
Situationally, the dome removes weather from the equation. The turf is fast, the kicking conditions are clean and neither passing game gets any help or hindrance from the elements. Atlanta also played its game on a short week, a Thursday night, so the Falcons have had a few extra days of recovery, while the Saints are home on a normal prep.
Our forecast is a slim Saints edge in a game that should stay near the number. The Saints' home setting, the likelihood that their turnover luck evens out and Atlanta's one-game sample all point toward New Orleans. The market agrees, with the Saints around -130 on the moneyline against +110 for Atlanta. At that price, the moneyline is the position we like; the spread and total sit too close to our projection to separate from the lines.
