Denver Broncos vs Los Angeles Chargers prediction and recent form

Denver arrives at SoFi Stadium as the better team on a day when Los Angeles looks as thin as it has in years. The Chargers are 0-4 and have just lost both starting tackles. The Broncos are 2-2 and coming off a flat 24-14 loss at San Francisco. This is less a mismatch than a test of whether Los Angeles can protect Justin Herbert at all.

Start with the Chargers' line. Rashawn Slater has a high ankle injury and is expected to be out for an extended stretch. Joe Alt is not expected to play because of a neck injury, and guard Trevor Penning is in the concussion protocol. Rookies Travis Burke and Logan Taylor held the tackle spots last week and will likely start again, possibly beside a reshuffled interior. Herbert has already been sacked eight times in four games and has thrown four interceptions. Denver's front is built to take advantage of exactly that situation, because it can get home with four rushers and keep extra coverage behind them. Against a young line, that is the matchup that decides how many possessions Los Angeles can sustain.

The form picture needs some care. Los Angeles's 30-23 loss at Seattle was closer than its record suggests, and the Chargers rallied in the second half. Even so, an offense averaging under 15 points a game has not earned much benefit of the doubt. Denver's own numbers are modest, at about 20 points a game, and the loss in San Francisco showed how quickly its offense can stall. One poor road game shouldn't carry too much weight, but Bo Nix's 605 passing yards on 93 attempts, with 3 interceptions and 5 sacks, describe an offense that is functional without being dangerous.

Denver has its own problems. Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss are both out at cornerback, and receiver Pat Bryant is headed to injured reserve. That is a real hit to a secondary that has usually been the team's identity. It matters most against a Chargers passing game that is short on healthy targets, with Quentin Johnston out and Ladd McConkey questionable with a foot injury. Without a clean pocket, Herbert may not have the time to attack the weakened Denver cornerbacks. Denver's defense also gives up about 144 rushing yards a game, so Omarion Hampton is the Chargers' most reliable route to staying on schedule. If Los Angeles keeps getting him the ball on early downs, the game stays close.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

On the other side, the Chargers' defense has allowed about eight yards per attempt and has little to lean on with Derwin James and Donte Jackson sidelined. Nix doesn't need to be spectacular here. He needs to avoid the turnovers that have dogged Los Angeles and let J.K. Dobbins and a short, efficient passing game do the work. Sean Payton taking back play-calling duties adds a reason to expect a tidier script.

The dome removes weather as a variable, and the fast MatrixTurf favors timing throws over deep shots, which suits an offense that has to throw quickly against pressure.

Denver is the likelier winner, mainly because it holds the clearer advantage in the trenches and Los Angeles has fewer ways to hurt it. The margin should be narrow, since both teams are banged up and both offenses are inconsistent. The Broncos' moneyline price has stayed fairly short, but it still reflects a team that is more likely than not to win, which is why that is the position here.
