Seattle Seahawks vs Denver Broncos prediction and recent form

Seattle arrives in Denver as the better team on balance and a short road favorite, but the Seahawks have spent the past week talking about what went wrong, not what went right. Their 32-29 loss to San Francisco, which dropped them to 3-2, came with four turnovers and five sacks, and the Broncos, also 3-2, are exactly the sort of home opponent that can turn that kind of carelessness into points.

Start with Seattle's quarterback situation, because it has shaped the whole season. Sam Darnold hurt his hip on the opening drive of the opener, and Drew Lock covered the next stretch well, rallying the Seahawks past New England and then throwing for three touchdowns in a 31-7 win over Arizona. Darnold's return against the 49ers was rough: two interceptions and five sacks, with Seattle giving the ball away often enough that the defense never got a clean game script. One bad afternoon does not rewrite the picture, and Seattle's offense moves the ball when it protects the football. That is the caveat worth carrying into Thursday night.

The backfield is the other soft spot. Zach Charbonnet is not expected to play, and both Emanuel Wilson and George Holani lost fumbles against San Francisco. A team that cannot trust its run game leans harder on its passing and exposes its quarterback to more third-and-long snaps.

Denver's form is more modest than it looks. The Broncos opened with a 31-10 loss to Kansas City in which Bo Nix was sacked four times and threw an early interception, then rebuilt the season around a defense that closed out a 23-17 comeback win over the Chargers last week. That defense is the reason this game is close. Its pass rush against Seattle's protection is the decisive matchup, and the Seahawks allowed five sacks last time out. If Denver gets home early and often, it can force the sort of mistakes that sank Seattle against San Francisco.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

Nix and the Denver offense have their own problems. The Broncos have not scored freely against good defenses, and Seattle's unit is the stingier one when it is not starting drives on a short field. Denver's most plausible path is a field-position game: keep the score low, punt well and let the home crowd and a defense that creates turnovers do the work.

Conditions may help that plan. The extended forecast for Mile High calls for a chance of rain and wind on Thursday night, which would make deep shots and long kicks harder and shorten the game. Seattle's offense is built on efficient throws to its receivers, and a wet, breezy night can blunt that. The short week with limited preparation also adds some variance for a Seattle offense still trying to settle its backfield.

Even so, Seattle is the likelier winner. Its defense is the more reliable unit, its quarterback play has been solid when it has been clean, and Denver has not shown it can punish opponents consistently. The edge is narrow, though, and the model puts Seattle at a slightly better than even chance, nowhere near a comfortable one. The right read is a tight game that Seattle wins by a field goal or so, provided it holds on to the ball.

On the market, Seattle's short moneyline price reflects a genuine but small edge, and that is where the position sits. The spread of about a field goal and the total in the low 40s sit close to where the numbers land, so there is no lean on either.
