New Orleans Saints vs New York Giants prediction and recent form

New Orleans arrives at MetLife Stadium with the worse record and the slightly better case. The Saints are 1-4 and coming off three straight losses. The Giants are 3-1-1, 3-0 at home and alone atop the NFC East. Even so, the market has the Saints as small favorites, and Bvcket's numbers see the game as close to a coin flip with a very small edge to New Orleans.

The records point in different directions, so start with the quarterbacks. Jaxson Dart is out for the season with a knee injury, and Jameis Winston is now New York's full-time starter. The Giants have not lost with him, but they tied Washington 27-27 last week. The offense is still adapting to a different style of quarterback, and J.J. McCarthy is expected to take a few change-of-pace snaps. Winston's gambles can turn into big plays or turnovers, and the line between those two outcomes is thin.

Tyler Shough has been just as uneven. He threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns in the road win at Baltimore, the Saints' only victory. Last week he managed a career-low 96 passing yards in a 23-13 loss to Minnesota. One bad afternoon shouldn't define him, and the pattern suggests more rebound than collapse. His connection with Chris Olave is the most reliable thing New Orleans has, though Olave was dealing with an illness during the week.

The decisive matchup is Shough and the Saints' protection against a Giants defense that now blitzes often under coordinator Dennard Wilson, after a slow start in sacks. If the Saints pick up the extra rushers, Shough gets quick throws to Olave and room for the running backs. If they don't, the pressure on a young quarterback can wipe out a drive. The Saints will want to keep the Giants' front from knowing what is coming. Early-down runs from Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller are the best way to do that. Kamara was limited in practice with a back issue, so his availability and workload matter.

Head-to-head and tactical matchup

New York has its own concerns. Darnell Mooney and tight end Theo Johnson were on the report with neck injuries, Abdul Carter did not practice, and Jason Pinnock cleared concussion protocol. Malik Nabers is back from his torn ACL and has been productive over the last two weeks. That gives Winston a real target against a Saints secondary that needs to hold up without much help from its pass rush.

Conditions shouldn't add much noise. The forecast is a mild 57 degrees, so the passing and kicking games should work normally. The Giants' home record is the strongest argument for them. A tie against Washington and a lone loss to the Rams aren't dominant results, though, and the Saints have beaten New York in each of the last three meetings, including 26-14 last October. That history carries little weight with new quarterbacks on both sides.

Bvcket's model projects a margin under half a point and a total around 45. That is a hair below the posted 46.5 and not enough to act on. The moneyline is the only place where the numbers and the price agree. The Saints are the slightly better bet to win outright, and they are close to a pick'em or small favorite there. Confidence is low. The spread and total are both too close to the market to support a lean.
